NeoCon 2013 is only 143…142…141… days away. Yeah, we know…

m+ believes in using the power of design to challenge convention and ask ‘what if.’ That is why we practice interdisciplinary design. Tells us what you need for NeoCon 2013 and we will do it better than you anticipate. We are not constrained by mediums or design disciplines.

We will make NeoCon easier for you. You will have one firm to work with (us!), instead of coordinating multiple firms with your internal departments. To streamline your project, we assemble a personalized team with the right professionals for your project’s size, all under one roof because design is our passion, not the size of the project.

Just need something simple like an email blast? We can do that. Need AOR services and an interior revamp for your showroom? We can do that with our alliance partner Gridwerk Architecture. Or, do you need an exhibit designed to travel to NeoCon, NeoCon East, IIDEX, and more? We can do that too. Need help creating your brand strategy, message, and then applying it to your space, website, and print collateral? Not a problem, we can do that with our alliance partner Studio PinPoint.

NeoCon is more than a 3-day show, it is your opportunity to build pre-show anticipation, develop new leads, and use them to increase sales long after NeoCon is over.

Call, message, tweet, or send smoke signals, whatever you have to, just reach out to us today.

Will you be an early bird this year?

Please contact Lauren Haras to discuss your project needs for NeoCon 2013 and beyond by email or at the studio at 773.227.0007.

While working with Okamura to update their showroom for NeoCon 2012, the need arose for art in the ‘conference room vignette’. Some within Okamura wanted to incorporate art that was comparable to what is normally seen in a corporate setting, while others wanted to use the space to show off more of their beautiful product photography, like what we used to create the macro graphics throughout the showroom. NeoCon was fast approaching, and because Okamura had many other things to prepare for the show, the decision of what the art would be was left to m+ (muahahaha!)

After a brief in-house meeting, it was quickly decided; let’s do both! Okamura’s upscale office furniture is so beautiful, it is art in and of itself. We printed out the photography that we had to work with and started folding the paper to see what other interesting forms we could create while accentuating the subtle beauty in the detail of Okamura’s product. Once we had a plan for each of the 6 images we wanted to create, it was taken back to the computer to become a reality.

Each image takes the photograph of one chair and either repeats or mirrors it to construct hypnotic and surreal works of art. The final images were printed in our studio and taken to the Frame Factory to be properly mounted and framed. We were able to deliver them to the showroom the day before NeoCon, and unveiled our creations in front of a dozen Okamura decision makers and employees from around the globe. As soon as the craft paper wrapping came off, the cell phones and cameras came out! We don’t know what they were saying, exactly, but we know it was good!

See the whole series, as well as the lovely framing details at our website!

It was hard for us to decide whether we wanted to create a wreath or a menorah for this year’s 13th Annual Steelcase Wreath and Menorah Charity Auction, so we decided to design both! Each design is unique and offers a completely different aesthetic.

For the wreath, we utilized off-cuts of acrylic samples graciously donated by 3form. Christmas colors are layered to create a mid-century modern wreath, pin-mounted to a beautiful walnut panel, which was donated by Greatlakes Architectural Millworks. Working together, the materials make a fun, colorful wreath that harkens back to a classic wreath, but with a modern twist! The name, S. Fernando, is a reference to the mid-century modern movement that was so prevalent in the San Fernando Valley.

For the menorah, we wanted an elegant yet slightly quirky design that utilizes olive oil lamps, like the original menorah. Our creation is made from test tubes, an Erlenmeyer flask, and a simple bent steel plate, which was welded by our own Andres Lemus.

Check out the website for more images and process of the wreath and menorah!

The Chicago Prize Competition occurs every other year and is an open, single stage, international competition run by the Chicago Architectural Club with the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects. This year there were 71 entries from 13 different countries. This years challenge, Future Prentice, was to study Bertrand Goldberg’s Prentice Women’s Hospital and explore solutions for the historic site that set the stage for modern hospital design, even today.

The team was led by James Wild, founder and principal of our partner firm Gridwerk Architecture, with Ashley Wendela and Andres Lemus. Overall rendering by Saman Moayer. Presentation layout and entourage by Lauren Haras and Katelyn Smith. Additional support by Katherine Lee, Pedro Melis, Kerry Rutz, Tom Marquardt and marquardt+.

Gridwerk’s design strategy looks to preserve Prentice as a center for community education with learning labs and science focused galleries, while creating a state-of-the-art laboratory research center connected by an open green roof ‘park’, accessible to the surrounding community, in the center of the NW campus.

Prentice and the adjoining site are ideal for promoting the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Coalition (STEM), which promotes the pursuit of careers in the sciences and technology.

The new, state of the art 500,000 sf lab building houses research labs and offices for NW, and supports the community with a needed public green space and knowledge resource center.

A subtractive design approach was taken with the existing Prentice structure. Removal of floorplates opens the volumes and creates a large central atrium to connect programs, allow natural light, and create an open terrace garden. These moves celebrate the sculptural qualities of the building and create a sequence of slow ascent.

The top level of the existing plinth is transformed into an elevated public street and park that provides the community with a much needed green space and respite to NW patients and staff, while creating an intimate relationship between Prentice and the community.

Nestled between the lake and Michigan Avenue, and adjacent to public thoroughfares, the site is often overlooked. This new program and design strategy makes Prentice and the new plaza a destination for the world and provides NW a visible signal of health, wellness and community.

marquardt+ was very excited to take part in this year’s Chefs’ Night Out, sponsored by CS Interiors. Each year, a number of restaurants and design firms are partnered to come up with a special food to present at the event. Tom met with Chef Jack Funderburg and his team from Prasino, and we decided to go for unabashed self promotion, and did a joint branding exercise, right down to the food design, as well as presentation.

Utilizing plexi squares we had in storage left over from a project, we laminated the backs in three tones of gold to green, hitting both our and Prasino’s brand colors and the tone in between. We also made square wood legs, based on the materiality of their restaurant.

We also utilized the concept of the image collage they have applied to their recessed booth seating, incorporating images of the m+ family and projects with their images of the Prasino family, restaurants and food. We layered this with a co-branded logo of marquardt+ Prasino to top off the total design/brand concept of this temporary installation within the Consentino Showroom at our assigned location.

The idea we developed and Chef Jack and team executed is a butter poached scallop with micro cilantro, nori wafer in a ponzu sauce. The presentation is a combination of both our logos: the wafer is the marquardt+ logo strike, and the scallop and micro cilantro is the logo “o”. The simple flat spoons provided style and easy enjoyment for our guests who didn’t have to juggle their drinks with plates or forks to devour our serving.

We didn’t win, but we did get rock star attention and a lot of happy and surprised faces when they experienced the food. We look forward to future collaboration with Prasino!

The Student NonTech Design Charette was a success! Tuesday of NeoCon 2012, Jim and Vince proctored the event, guiding the students as they went through the program, gathered samples from NeoCon showrooms and exhibits, sketched out their ideas, and brought their charette concept together into a presentation, all in 6 hours!

At 3:00, design time was up, and presentations began! The student teams each proposed their solutions for the Merchandise Mart’s South Lobby to the three judges for the event, Debbie Carruthers of DIRTT, Jim Williamson of IIDA and Gensler, and Tom Marquardt of marquardt+, who then deliberated afterwards to select a winner and first runner up.

On Wednesday the IIDA awards ceremony was hosted by DIRTT Environmental Solutions at their Chicago Showroom, where Monica DeAngelis of IIDA and Tom announced the winners and runners up, and gave a special award for the most professionally enthusiastic individual during presentation!

Overall, it was a great event and really got the students thinking low-tech, rather than going straight to the computer, and involved them with NeoCon in a much more inclusive way. Make sure to watch for it again next year!
